Muslimah on a Budget: Rimmel Product Reviews

I’ve recently bought a few Rimmel London products. I’ve always been satisfied with their mascara, especially the RIMMEL GLAM’EYES Mascara in Black. It works so flawlessly. It adds volume and length (for me) with this brush that just lifts and separates every single lash. Aside from that fact I purchased a few of their other products. One I was not so fond of, and the other two were AMAZING!

Lets give the BAD news first :(   I purchased the 60 SECONDS VINYL STARS nail polish in 651 Eccetricity. This product looked lovely in its bottle. I love golds, and I think that golds against rich tones really pop and I was excited to just use it on my finger/toe nails and have a little bit of glow for the summer time. NO WAY! The product went on very sparse. You would literally have to put on about three different coats to get a great results. You don’t even get the little shapes that you see in the bottle like the round circles, you only get the little flecks of glitter. Super disappointing, but it wasn’t such a hefty price to be really mad over. Just something to avoid. In a sense it reminded me of the little girl nail polish that comes with her Barbie toy, that really doesn’t do much but pleases the child. That’s what it reminded me of.

RATING: 0/4

Now to the good news. The RIMMEL LONDON VOLUME BOOST LIQUID LIPCOLOR was great. I did not buy this for myself, I typically bought it for my clients. My lips are as full as they should possibly be for my face. But I do understand the request that some people do want a pouty and full look to their lips. I tried this on myself to get the sensation, because some volume boosting lipcolor and REALLY sting and burn. Especially if you’re not used to it or experienced that “bee-sting” like sensation, it’s not pleasant. However, this did not give that. It felt a little menthol-ish. As if you were to drop peppermint in your lips. For me, I didn’t see anything too dramatic but I did notice some of the natural lines in my lips smooth out. It gave enough color that you can wear it for any occasion really. You can wear it with a more detailed makeup look or just by itself everyday with a little mascara. I bought this product in several colors.  This product is not expensive, and it has a great texture. It’s not a watery product, is semi-thick and you don’t have to worry about applying it so often. Put it on, and forget about it.

  • 160 Innocent-A sheer baby pink color for fair women
  • 170 Kiss Me-A true red color that looks great on pretty much any skin tone, even the darkest
  • 180 Starry Eyed-My personal favorite, a beautiful berry look for dark to deep tones
  • 190 Breathless- A deeper pink tone that works wonderfully for medium to tan tones

RATING: 3.9/5

Lastly, I really adored a product called VOLUME FLASH INSTANT THICKENING MASCARA. Again, I bought this product in a two eye enhancing colors just to try to see if I would like it. It did a pretty good job. I’ve always been a fan of their mascaras, and I wish I would’ve bought more (and probably will go back and buy more) because I was happy with the result. The brush was nice and thin and spiky, so you could grab those inner lashes, outer lashes, and bottom lashes that are sometimes difficult to do with a thicker brush. My lashes are long, and a thicker brush sometimes leaves that mark on my eyelid that I don’t care for.

  • 006 Black Sapphire-For brown eyes, or even blue if you want to achieve that “dreamy eyed” look
  • 008 Black Emerald-For hazel and brown eyes.

RATING: 4/5

So, those are my product reviews. To each her own, but I do believe that a good majority of ethnic women can enjoy these products. Rimmel London is NOT known for specializing in products for a diverse crowd, however I do believe that ethnic women of all backgrounds can enjoy these products. You have to take what you can from what is available!

South Asian & Arab Bridal Looks and Tips

Summer time is notorious for weddings, and with that a lot of people are looking for ideas and just inspiration on how to create a spin of or replicate a look that is colorful, tasteful, and flawless. Below I put together two variations of bridal looks that I have typically done for my clients, on myself.

The first look is a natural and blended soft, yet dramatic look.  Aside from the color near the brow-bone,  I used mostly matte finishes. It’s important to do so, because when the cameras are flashing, a brides face can be washed out by the lighting, when either satin finishes or any other “glittery” finish is used. So you want to try and stick with matte as much as possible especially on the face (i.e. blush, foundation, powder) or the makeup will wear you, you will not wear the makeup. Another important tip to keep in mind is to DEFINE THE BROWS!! I’ve sen a lot of wedding photos where the brow was not defined, and it did not give that clean cut and professional look to the photo, as well as not doing the bride justice. Always make sure your brows are threaded, waxed, plucked..what have you and make sure that you define them with a brow pencil or powder that matches your brows. It may feel different and a little heavy at first, but trust the artist and allow them to do so. Make sure that you use a soft highlight. I used one by Too Faced Afterglow in Lust. I put it down my nose using a fan brush, and along the top of of my cheek bones. You want to appear as you’re glowing, but you do not want to look shiny. Because that will display in the pictures.

The second look can be seen as dramatic, and a typical Arabic inspired look. Simply because of the extension in the liner, and the the way the eyeliner is cut at the bottom, filling with highlight toward the inner eye, and lastly the sharp edged cut with the eyeshadow on the outer eye.

Now, too add more pizzaz you can always apply false lashes. I only apply them for my clients, and try to stay away from them myself :)

Hair: Summer ‘Dos

If you haven’t been noticing lately pony tails are very in! They are super functional, and can be dressed up or down.  For the look above, I spray Beyond The Zone Super Sexy Hair Pro Formula hair spray and scrunched my hair with the product. Off center parted my hair, twisting the front side with more hair and pulling out a piece of hair under the twist, and threw it back in a pony tail. Simple enough, right? Right! So simple that it literally only took me five mins to do (or less).  Beyond The Zone Super Sexy Hair Pro Formula hair spray can be found at Sally’s Hair Supply, for around $6. A great value for not only the size of the product, but how well it maintains a hairstyle.

To accentuate a pony tail, I like to add in a braid, or the “milk maid braid” to be more specific. I’m sure you’ve seen this look everywhere and on everyone. However, that’s because it looks good on anyone. Long hair, short hair, medium hair; it doesn’t really matter. It really draws attentions to the face shape, and gives you an opportunity to play up your eyes. However, it’s a life-saver for those with long hair who want to get the hair off of their neck during hot summer days. Or, for those of you with short hair who don’t necessarily need to pull the hair off your neck, you can create a half up, half down look. I will be demonstrating the milk maid braid in both variations in a video tutorial very soon.

For those of you who don’t know how to braid, you can try the twist method that I used above. Just ensure that your twisting is tight and secure, so that it does not unravel throughout the day.  Also, remember to always use an anti frizz serum to control the fly aways and the heat from frizzing and drying your hair out during a warm or humid day.

Advice: Lightweight Summertime Makeup

The summer time is a difficult time for sisters who prefer to wear makeup. The sun’s rays do a very good job at melting mascara’s and eyeliners. For those of you who choose to wear a brow pencil, well you can smear your eyebrows goodbye! Liquid foundation is the biggest no no. Not unless you want streaks in your foundation, and how on earth do you keep your eyeshadow from creasing? Well don’t fret. As damaging as the sun’s rays can be, the sun itself can play a very vital role in how glamorous you can look without the heavy products! However, before you even think about using any products, wash your face well, and make sure you moisturize with a good facial lotion or cream with an SPF ONLY.

Use powder, not liquid foundation during the day: This is because powder sets on the skin better than liquid during the summer. The ingredients in liquid will not allow your skin to breathe once your body becomes overheated, and thus you will end up sweating it off anyway. Around 2-3:00p the sun is at its hottest! Try a powder, because even through a few droplets of perspiration, it will hold tighter than liquid foundation. It will also cause you to sweat less.

Try using L’Oreal True Match powder. Great bang for your buck, you can always find a deal (like two for one) when you visit Walgreens or CVS. IT does not oxidize harshly on women of color like other likes do. Meaning, it won’t start out one shade, and leave your face darker than your neck within 20 minutes.

Find a sturdy concealer: MAC concealer pots, in my opinion, is the best concealer out there for women whose skin pigment is uneven. If you have dark circles under the eyes, than this is your best bet. It is not cheap, but it last a very long time. Although now mine has a dent it in (lol) I’ve had it for over a year. It goes on flawlessly with either a concealer brush or the tip of your finger. If you do decide to use your fingertips to blend the concealer, make sure that they are clean and that your use your ring finger to blend. It uses less pressure which will save you from dreadful eye circles later down the line. Apply only under the eye, and let the powder do the rest of the work for you.

Use eyeshadow primer: People who tend to have oily eyelids find summertime a drag when it decides to crease. Using a primer such as Urban Decay Primer Potion will clear your woes. It works simply amazing for EVERY skin tone. Try it, and buy it! You’ll love it!

Find a productive blush: By that I mean a blush that will not vanish by the middle of the day. A blush that looks as vibrant as it did when you put it on in the morning (or afternoon for my late nighters).  I tend to like the MAC Mineralize collection for blushes. More specifically “Merrily”, because it has a beautiful color for tan skin tones to even dark skin tones. It also has gold flecks in it which will pop in the sunlight, giving you a bronze look as well. Now that’s what I call a productive blush!

Water-proof mascara and waterproof liquid liner: I believe this is self explanatory. Try to learn to use liquid eyeliner. It will become your best most efficient friend in the end for one simple reason, pencil (cheap) liners will melt off your eyelid and into your delicate eye. You don’t want to go through the pain!  :(

(products used: L’Oreal True Match Powder Foundation, MAC Mineralize Blush in Merrily, MAC Studio Finish concearler, MAC Cream Color Base in Bronze frost [used on eyelids], Maybeline Ultra Liner Waterproof in black, Rimmel Glamour Eyes Mascara in black, Nobi Eyeliner in brown [bottom waterline] L’Oreal HIP Jelly Balm in Succulent 520)

Review #1: Glamour Doll Eyeshadow

Glamour Doll eyeshadow can be summed up as a collection of loose (meaning not pressed in a small, flat metal pot) eyeshadows, that have edgy names to describe the vibrant colors. The eyeshadow featured in the picture below, on the lid specifically, is called “Dirty Girl”. It is a dark reddish-brown color with iridescent green undertones. However, I found the green undertone to be a little overpowering in contrast to the reddish brown. The flash captures the color perfectly as described while the human eye does not. Even so, for the price I liked the color payoff of the product. While applying the eyeshadow it went on fairly smooth with little to no fallout. Meaning the product did not fall under the eye leaving an annoying thin layer of shadow to stain the skin as some pigmented and loose shadows tend to do. In contrast to my deep skin tone, I had absolutely no problem with trying to get the color to pick up off of the light. The owner of Glamour Doll Cosmetics also sends you two free samples with any purchase so that you can get a feel for the other eyeshadows.  The samples are enough to create about 1-2 different looks. All-in-all I would describe the loose powders to be very light, vibrant, and easily blendable. The texture of the eyeshadow and samples was very smooth and soft.  Best when used with Urban Decay Primer potion.

USER RATING: 3/5

The look created above is great for formal occasions as well as attending wedding parties/events.

Beauty Tip of the Day: Windchapped lips with dry skin? Try taking granulated sugar (beacuse it’s sweet to the taste) and mixing it with a small amount of vaseline (because it conditions). Rub the mixture across your top and bottom lips in a back and fourth motion, with your index finger for 30 seconds. The vaseline conditions as the sugar exfoliates. After you’re done, gently wipe off the excess with a damp, not soaked, cotton ball. It will absorb the excess sugar without wiping away the natural oils that conditions the lips from the vaseline. And there you have it, lips that aren’t so chapped after all!

Welcome to MuslimahBeauty

Marhaba! (Hello)

Welcome to MuslimahBeauty, your personal beauty source! This is a blog dedicated to my ethnic sisters especially, and anyone interested in creating phenomenal looks as well as looking amazing with or without makeup! My inspiration for this blog came especially because I am a beauty freak. I love anything that pertains to skincare, haircare, makeup, application, and creating different looks. I believe in inner beauty as well as outer beauty, and putting your best self forward. By that I mean, spiritually, mentally, and physically. This is the key to life long enhancement. My second inspiration came from the lack of websites/blogs/magazines that I was unable to find that marketed towards women of color. All women of color. Within having tanner or darker skin tones from Caucasian women, means a limited amount of products and options available to us. With tan-deep tones our skin tends to absorb light, instead of reflecting it. This causes eyeshadow to not  show up as vibrant, problems with finding the perfect skin foundation or blush,  and just many other limited things in the cosmetic, skincare, and haircare world. We tend to have specific needs, and those needs are hidden and limited.  They are out there, we just need to find what and where they are.  I’m here to act as your personal makeup artist, hair stylist, and esthetician in showing you what is available to you and what to do with it!  So don’t give up!

So, what should you expect? Lots and Lots!

Phenomenal, but the makeup was and brushes were super expensive? Just never that happy medium. Well, this is your happy medium. I will show you how to get the best bang for your buck. Looks that you can do whether you are a college student, homemaker, or within your career. This is something you can do. These are products you can afford.
